Free Speech

Shalampaxians are strong believers in free speech. Consequently, it’s legal to say anything here.
Someone in Shalampax who is libeled can sue the libeler, but it is a civil matter, not a legal one. And the burden of proof lies with the person who feels that he or she has been slandered. The claimant must prove the slanderer’s guilt. The slanderer doesn’t have to prove his or her innocence.
The claimant in a libel case here can win the suit only if he or she can prove that the statement made by the defendant was untrue and that it harmed the reputation of the claimant. This is an almost insurmountable obstacle because it is virtually impossible to sully any Shalampaxian’s reputation any more than it has already been sullied.
