Cult Manual: Foundation Stories

Don't worry about making your cult's foundation stories plausible. The capacity of the weak-minded to believe the unbelievable is unlimited. And there's no shortage of weak-minded in this world. You want to claim that aliens manufactured humans and are using us as part of an experiment? No problem. An energy force runs through all creation, guiding our daily lives and making it impossible for us to get dates? You betcha. A omnipotent, omnipresent invisible being watches over us, judges us and doles out cruel and unusual punishments for reasons we can't possibly fathom? Even better.

Not only should you not worry about making your cult's underlying premises plausible, you should spend considerable time checking and double-checking to ensure that not one of them makes the least bit of sense. The minute your adherents start thinking that it might be possible to justify their beliefs through rational thought your cult is sunk. You have to construct your stories in a way that allows you to preach that bliss can be found through faith and faith alone.
